Monte Carlo simulations of a surface reaction model showing spatio-temporal pattern formations and oscillations Effects of local reactant concentration perturbations in oscillatory catalysis Oscillatory surface reaction kinetics due to coupling of bistability and diffusion limitations In this article, we investigate dynamic behaviors of a gel layer attached to a rigid substrate and submerged in a continuous stirred tank reactor. With a continuous feed of fresh reactants in the reactor, the concentrations of reactants stay constant on the surface of the gel layer. However, the concentrations of reactants inside the gel are inhomogeneous and vary with time, which are determined by the diffusion and chemical reactions of the reactants. Additionally, both monotonic and oscillatory swelling-shrinking dynamics are predicted in the gel if the swelling capability of the gel depends on the concentration of a reactant. Based on autocatalytic reaction, kinetic model, and nonequilibrium thermodynamic theory of gels, in this article, we investigate the effect of the thickness of the gel layer, lateral prestretches in the gel and the initial concentrations of reactants in the gel on its dynamic behaviors. We have also calculated the evolution of the swelling force that the gel layer exerts on its constrained substrate. The results of this article may find potential applications in using responsive gels to make chemo-mechanical sensors, actuators, biomimetic devices, and even drug delivery systems. Chemomechanics of Self-Oscillating Gels

Biological materials such as cardiac and skin tissue exhibit the unique capacity to transduce mechanical stimuli into propagating electrical and chemical signals throughout the body. Few synthetic materials have been engineered to produce communicative chemical signals in response to mechanical input, though such synthetic material analogues could enable devices that mimic biological tissues an...

Oscillatory dynamics induced in polyelectrolyte gels by a non-oscillatory reaction: a model.

We develop a general model and the associated numerical algorithm to compute the swelling dynamics of chemo-responsive polyelectrolyte gels immersed in a reactive ionic solution kept at a non equilibrium stationary state by a permanent feed of fresh reactants. Using an autocatalytic bistable but nonoscillatory reaction, namely, the bromate-sulfite reaction, we predict that a piece of hydrogel t...

Shape- and size-dependent patterns in self-oscillating polymer gels†‡

Polymeric hydrogels that exhibit autonomous, coupled chemical and mechanical oscillations are a unique example of synthetic, active soft matter. Here, we explore the effects of gel aspect ratio and absolute dimensions on pattern formation in hydrogels undergoing the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. We synthesize and analyze N-isopropylacrylamide gels containing covalently bound BZ catalyst a...

Autonomous gel/enzyme oscillator fueled by glucose: Preliminary evidence for oscillations.

A novel prototype gel oscillator that functions by dissipating the chemical energy of glucose by an enzyme-mediated reaction is proposed. The product of the reaction modulates the degree of swelling and hence the permeability of a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-methacrylic acid) gel membrane which in turn regulates the flow of substrate to the enzyme. No external energy is required aside from th...
